Audience Profile

Demographic
Demographics is the statistical study of a population specifically looking at certain aspects such as age, gender, race, etc. Demographic information is in media marketing to group and classify an audience into categories.

The NRS scale is divided into different categories which are: A, B, C1, C2, D and E (ABC1 and C2DE). This scale is based on the occupation and income that the individuals have.

However some of these classes may overlap which might not be as suitable for a target audience.

Advantages:
Information is easily accessible
Simple categorisation

Disadvantages:
Some classes may overlap
The occupation is based on the head of the household

This is my own Demographic Table that i created based on my short film target audience.

Psychographic
Psychographics is the study of an individuals personality characteristics, lifestyle, values, etc.

This is based on the assumption that by investigating what an individual or group types of products and brands that they are likely to purchase will reflect their characteristics and patterns of living.

Advantages:
Wider variety within categories/ groups
Creates individual groups

Disadvantages:

Some individuals may have more than one personality causing overlapping

Finding and analysing a good presentation

I researched videos showing how to give a good presentation and analysed the information given to me and applied it to my own work. My chosen video that I used to analyse was presented by Carl  Kwan as he gave three very clear and significant tips and steps in being able to create a positive presentation as well as keeping your audience engaged. I viewed Carl Kwan's footage of being able to give a good presentation and took note of key information that was relevant in applying it to my own work.

Presentation Tip: 3 Steps To Easily Introduce Yourself- Notes
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_mc1ckQGHpk

Why introduce yourself?

Elevator pitch 30 second detail of yourself

You should start a presentation by addressing yourself to the audience and stating what your presentation will be about.

Fewer words- more succinct

  •        Accompanying visuals
  •        Direct address- engaging the audience
  •        Tone of voice
  •        Formal language- clarity, humour
  •        Body language

Step 1: Give your name and company
Step 2: Your specialty or what your value is
Step 3: Who it will help “Even if”
Introduction to my own presentation
Would you recognise a victim of Psychological abuse? Did you know that many individuals who suffer this abuse may not even acknowledge that they are going through it.

Good morning, my name is Loren Turner, welcome to my presentation. I am here today to spread the awareness of psychological abuse and in hope of succeeding in winning the commission to create my short film. I want to be able to inform you of how severe the abuse can be and possible outcomes that it can have on a victim. Creating this short film will help those in need in being able to express the awful affects and torture that many endure.

Even if an individual who does not experience psychological abuse views this short film they will hopefully take matters further such as using the information given from the short film and applying it to others around them which could potentially help real life victims. Victims do not have to suffer and deal with this type of abuse silently nor alone.

Positives and negatives of a verbal presentation

Positives of a verbal presentation
  • Clarity of communication
  • Using humour to engage the audience
  • Tone of voice you use to inform your audience
  • Formal language
  • Accompanying visuals
  • Directly address the audience
  • Body language

Negatives of a verbal presentation
  • Using slang
  • Talking too fast
  • Not specifying important information
  • Not including relevant information
A verbally given presentation can be an advantage although many individuals in the audience can become bored and distracted easily. Using images and PowerPoint can increase the quality of the presentation given.

Starter

Starter
  1. Each slide of the presentation bears the title “short drama: abuse”;
  2. The two faces in the graphic are horizontally stretched;
  3. The white text on the slide cannot be seen against the grey background;
  4. Slides 3, 4 and 5 are dominated by small, dense text;
  5. The ideas contained in the long paragraph on slide 7 are hard to identify.

Write solutions to the problems.

Solutions
  1. Change the title so that each slide has their own group
  2. Find a high resolution image and instead of stretching the image horizontally stretch it from the corners ensuring they are all equal
  3. Change the colour of the font or background so that the audience are able to view the text
  4. Spread the text over more slides which will allow you to be able to use bigger font
  5. Use bullet points so the audience are able to identify complicated ideas and text

Revisions

1. Proof-reading                                                                                2. Electronic Checks

Clarity of expression                                                                          Thesaurus

Structure of content

Evidence of this needs to be print screened with a written commentary of how it has been improved

Changes that have been made to improve the presentation have been underlined and identified in the print screened images.

Slide 3

On Slide 3 I have improved the quality of writing by changing the words used for more formal grammar such as using furthermore instead of also. I have also erased unnecessary extra words. For example getting rid of "of abuse." where it is not needed in the text. As well as "hard to acknowledge victims of this." has been deleted and changed to "and might be difficult to acknowledge.". The reason for this is that it makes more sense when reading it rather than the previous text.

Slide 4

The first change that I made to this slide is getting rid of the unnecessary comma between "wife" and "although" as there is no need for a pause before continuing. Using proof-reading I realised that "losses" was spelt incorrectly and was in fact meant to be looses. Another unnecessary comma was erased from the next paragraph between "Ultimately" and "I". I also replaced both words "to" and "may" within this paragraph as "towards" and "might". Doing this makes the sentences clearer and make more sense.

Slide 5

There were quite a few changes that I made to Slide 5. The first was including the fathers name in the first sentence so that the audience can gather a clear understanding of the abusers identification.

Linguistic register

What is a Linguistic Register?

A Linguistic Register is a variety of different words and specific language choices used in

particular social settings and texts. It is important to use and understand Linguistic register

so that you are able to use the correct language for different situations and texts.

Original text from Short Film Proposal PowerPoint:
The main conflict is between the father and daughter as they have many disputes about the

mental state of the young girl. Her father is an alcoholic and regularly blames his daughter

for the loss of his wife, although we know this is not true. The teenager starts to believe his

horrible lies and rapidly looses her self-esteem and concept. Already overcome with and

suffering from depression she has to experience her fathers abuse everyday where she

thinks she has no where else to turn.

This piece of text is more positive and appropriate than the changed one as it is more

formal and professional. Using high quality grammar and words is effective and important

Changed/ bad text:
the problem with the dad and girl is about the girls sadness. her dad drinks and

says that it is her fault for the death of his wife. the girl starts to believe him and losses her

self-esteem and feels even more sad she suffers from depression and has to

deal with her dad and his abuse and school all the time she doesnt think she has anywhere

else to go

key:

 - no capital letter

 - informal language/ wrong words used

 - incorrect punctuation/ no punctuation

 - misspelled word

Using no capital letters at the end of a sentence shows poor language skills and can leave

the reader not being able to understand where the pauses/ sentences are meant to be and

end.

Informal language and using words that are inappropriate can make the text less

professional. The repetition of 'and' also implicates an unprofessional way of writing the

text.

Using the incorrect punctuation and/or no punctuation shows poor writing and English skills.

Not using punctuation such as full stops at the end of a sentence shows poor language

skills and can leave the reader not being able to understand where the pauses/ sentences

are meant to be and end.

Misspelled words show the inability to be able to spell correctly which furthermore show

bad language knowledge.

Short film research

1.    What is the age range of potential viewers?
15+ will be the age minimum for the viewing of my short film. Although it is not too graphical it can contain upsetting and disturbing footage that some people may find offensive.

2.    ABC1:
My short film can appeal to all social classes; psychological abuse can affect anyone in all classes

3.   What gender will the audience be?
The audience of my short film can be both male and female however women are more  predominate to be abused rather than men.

4.   What will the occupation be of potential consumers?
The occupation of potential consumers can be not-for-profit businesses such as counselling services and hospitals.

5.   What factors are potential customers likely to consider before purchasing/
     consuming the short film?
Customers may be hesitant to be seen viewing the short film or purchasing it as they  might feel ashamed and embarrassed.

6.    How will customers find out about the short film you are distributing?
Customers will find out about the short film from promotions such as:
  •     Television
  •     Social media sites (Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, YouTube) etc

7.   Will the cost of the product influence a customer’s decision to buy from you? (if you are selling it- you might argue it is free)
The short film is free as it is an advertisement and informs the audience of the abuse and possible helplines which are also free.

8.    List all the ways contact could be made with potential customers in order to gain qualitative and quantitative research
Qualitative research:
  •      Focus groups
  •      Questionnaires
  •      Individual interviews
  •      In-depth interviews
  •      Observations
  •      Action research
  •      Notes on opinions
  •      Document review
Quantitative research:
  •      Experiments/ clinical trials
  •      Observing and recording well-defined events
  •      Obtaining relevant data
  •      Surveys with close-ended questions (face-to-face and telephone interviews, questionnaires)
  •      Links on social media sites

9.       Probable objectives to your short film
Objectives to my short film are:
  •      Informing the audience of how they can gain access to helplines
  •      Showing them the affects of the abuse
  •      A victims perspective
  •      How the audience are able to identify the abuse
  •      Informing the audience of the statistics and general information of the abuse

10.   Risk of alienating your secondary audience

The secondary audience can appeal to the abuse as much as the primary audience. If the secondary audience understand that someone from the primary audience has viewed this short film advertisement they might become informed that something is wrong or that there may be a problem within this person and confide in them for help. However it could cause more problems than it may solve whereas if the victim views this and their abuser knows this it could make the situation worse.

10 tips for a better slide that will communicate your ideas more effectively

1. The slides of the presentation come last
The slides of the presentation should be the last part of your communication to your audience. You want to ensure that the most important and significant message you are trying to get across is thought and planned out thoroughly about in detail before you start to work on the rest of your presentation. The slides work better if there are short sentences, key words and notes instead of a lot of writing so that your audience does not get distracted from the information that is being verbally given to them.

2. Presentation should be consistent in the way it looks and feels
The presentation of your power point should be relatively set out the same. For example using the same font, size of the writing, colours and images that may be used. The reason behind this is so it does not distract the audience from the message that is being given. You want your audience to have their full attention on this so that it is able to stay in their mind and they do not forget what they are being informed on.

3. Considering topic transitions
Although you want to have the structure and shape of your slides relatively similar you do not want to repeat yourself and the way you plan out the slides. It can be interesting to experiment with the way you plan out your presentation as well as entertaining to view from your audience as long as they do not get distracted from the main message that is trying to be put across. However this does not mean you have to make your presentation boring and plain. For example if you want to add colour to your presentation such as having a dark background with light text and on the next slide it is changed around so there is a light background with dark text it can make it interesting to see. It is good to introduce transition in your slides as long as they link together nicely and are not too far apart in the way they are structured.

4. Not overloading your slides with material
It is important to understand that having too much text in your slides will distract the audience from what you are saying verbally. You do not want to repeat yourself in your slides and have text that is repeating either what has already been shown or said. Having too much information on power point slides can distract the audience and allow them to wonder off from the main message. The audience may focus all of their attention on trying to read too much of the information on a slide to be able to listen to what is being said to them. Using keywords, short and simple sentences will allow the audience to keep these specific points in their head instead of being fed too much information that they will not remember the big picture. Using bullet points may help your audience to pick out and understand key points in your slides.

5. Using photographs that enhance the meaning
Using photos in a presentation can be entertaining for the audience instead of just having key points and words shown in front of them. Having pictures included in your presentation can also keep your audience focused on what you are communicating to them, instead of having words and sentences that may distract them, they are able to glance at the image while still being engaged in what you are verbally communicating to them. You want to ensure that the pictures you use are relating to your theme/ message you are putting across so that it does not leave the audience confused and distracted. You also want to ensure that the pictures you use are not too complex and difficult to understand by your audience.

6. Do not overdo the effects and transitions of your power point
Many power point related documents and programs offer their customers all sorts of different types of effects and special transitions to include in their slides. Such as having effects that change from one slide to another in a fancy way that they may think will keep the audience interested and engaged in their presentation which if it is overdone, is not the case. Using too much effects on your presentation and ones that clash and do not go well together and lure your audience away from your message and distract them. If you wish to use effects and transitions in your presentation try to use subtle and simple ones instead of trying to make the slides 'fancy' as it will become a waste of valuable time and will ultimately distract the audience.

7. Using masking to direct attention to pictures that may be used
Masking can be important and useful when giving a presentation as you can identify key elements and points in your message that you want the audience to specifically look at in depth. it can be useful to highlight key information and elements of your work that you want your audience to view so that they are able to identify relevant and important material.

8. Attempting to pan large images
Instead of cropping images and screenshots that you may use you can pan an image vertically as you explain and talk about the image(s). You do not want to crop out relevant information in order to fit it on a slide of a Powerpoint otherwise the audience might miss out on important information and become confused by the different cropped components of the material. using Keynote can be effective as you can use a Move effect which can be applied to an objects action panel.

9. Do not use auto-play for a video
It is easy to include a video (if necessary or relevant) in your presentation on Powerpoint or either Keynote as you are able to drag this material from a Quicktime file onto your chosen slide. Sometimes when the video is set to auto play the machine might take a while to actually start playing which can delay and lead the audience off track. It may also come across as quite unprofessional and unplanned. Sometimes when presenter use this they attempt to click again in order to start the material and end up continuing to the next slide. Instead of experiencing these issues set the video to click to play. This way it is more predictable to control over the video start time.

10. Adjusting simple charts and graphs
It is an advantage to use charts and graphs in your presentation although it could be improved if there is enough time to strengthen the material. For example if you are using a simple chart to show statistics or information you can label, address and select relevant and important information so that your audience have a better understanding of the material. By including your own extra information to the used charts/ graphs it can better the audiences understanding and can make more clear to them what is actually being shown to them.

How to give a positive presentation

Possible problems with a PowerPoint presentation:
Not being able to understand or see the writing on the presentation due to the font being too small
A member of staff talking to quickly or not explaining information correctly
Lighting is either too dark or too bright
A teacher might not know the material on the slides
Too much volume of information per slide
Overlapping of information
Information that is irrelevant
Pick out key material

What is the correct way to give a presentation:
Focus is sharp
Rehearsed presentation
Walk through the information
Text is fairly large so that everyone can see it
Know the information and material on the presentation by heart
Go into depth with information that students do not understand fully
Have a specific style of expression
Confidence
Talk at a steady pace

The presentation should be told like a story
Aristotle- beginning, middle, end
Interesting and imaginative ways of explaining information
Presentations have a shape
Combined Martin Luther King and Steve Jobs presentations together
Tell the audience what it is and then what it could be
Motivating the audience
Don’t talk all the time, include pictures, videos etc
Laughing, clapping
Enthusiasm, models for the audience
Creating a moment that will not be forgotten
Personal stories, interesting
Quoting someone else

Handout- reading techniques

Combination task
Identifying handouts
Reading a written source and extracting information
Obtaining information from a handout

Toolkit
Identifying specific written sources
Reading
Extracting information

Write notes, summarise, highlight text, annotate document, underline passages, copy and paste extracts

When reading this handout I will skim-read and scan read as well as read the whole text with concentration. Reading with concentration will let me be able to understand what the text is about and understand what they are trying to inform or evaluate. Skim-reading is helpful in order to pick out key information such as the title and subheadings/topics of certain aspects of psychological abuse. Scan reading is effective in using during my research as it enables me to locate certain words and phrases which appear several times and explain what some sorts of abuse can be.

I have highlighted key elements and words such as the subheadings of this handout in order to understand the types of abuse that can be used, for example; Name Calling, Demeaning Statements, Intimidation etc. Included underneath these subheadings are different types of abuse that someone can use as it is a self-evaluation handout. It is important to understand that the handout is self-evaluated as it is not normally, this way it is making the people investigating the research as well as the person answering the questions which people may be abusers in certain relationships, especially towards a spouse.

Annotation techniques

Evaluate how different annotation techniques worked with differing degrees of effectiveness for extracting different sorts of information.

Annotation techniques:
1. Highlighting
2. Underlining
3. Labelling

Before you start to annotate your chosen text it is important to read all of the writing. Failing to read text before you start to annotate you may not be able to identify significant information.

Highlighting is effective in identifying key information and passages in a text such as a relevant quote. Highlighting is useful in finding and keeping in mind what quotes and passes are useful. Although it is important to identify and highlight key points, words or relevant text; you do not want to exceed this as it can become too much to focus on and can distract/ confuse viewers or yourself when reading and trying to gather the information. Highlighting can be useful with:

  • Identifying key ideas
  • Passage introductions
  • Potential contact information
  • Short phrases

Underlining is effective in identifying key words relating to the topic or information you are looking for. Underlining is a lot like highlighting. It identifies key elements that you want to stand out against the rest of the text. Underlining can be used for other relevant data such as:

  • Large sections of text
  • Names
  • Places
  • Repetitive ideas
  • Potential difficult words

Labelling is effective in putting certain information into categories and specific places with other extracts relating to each other. It is a useful annotation technique to label various information as you are able to identify different categories and areas of the text. Labelling can make it easier to gather the data.
